Ajrakh Handblock

About the Craft

Ajrakh, practiced by the Khatri community in Kutch and Sindh, is a multi-stage resist printing tradition using indigo and madder as primary dyes. The cloth undergoes up to sixteen steps — including mordanting, block printing, resist application, and dyeing on both sides for perfect symmetry.
Its complex geometry reflects Islamic and Sindhi design influences, where balance symbolizes harmony. Local mineral-rich water enhances the depth of color, and slow alternation between dyeing and sun-drying ensures lasting vibrancy and structure.
