About Handblock Printing
The Art that Gave Pattern to India
The technique uses hand-carved wooden blocks to apply color onto fabric, each hue requiring a separate block aligned with precision through cycles of printing, washing, and sun-drying.
Over centuries, artisans shaped the craft around their surroundings- water, soil, and natural dyes, giving rise to regional styles. Sanganer’s fine florals, Bagru’s earthy tones, Ajrakh’s indigo geometry, and Dabu’s mud-resist motifs, each echoing its landscape and culture.
Layered printing creates subtle irregularities and tonal shifts that machines cannot reproduce, giving it handmade depth and character.
