Masters of Extra-weft

A master weaver from Bhujodi, Vankar Vishram Valji represents the enduring spirit of Kutch’s handloom tradition. Born into a family of weavers, he inherited the craft from generations who spun stories in yarn. With over four decades of experience, his work reinterprets the Bhujodi weave, a rhythmic interplay of wool, cotton, and extra-weft motifs inspired by pastoral life. Shamji ji has been pivotal in uplifting his artisan community, mentoring younger weavers and expanding their global presence through collaborations and exhibitions. His textiles embody both precision and poetry, earning him national recognition as a custodian of Kutch’s weaving heritage and its timeless aesthetic.

Meet the Artisans

The Vankar Vishram Valji family workshop in Bhujodi unites nearly 90 weaving and dyeing artisan families rooted in the Meghwal-Vankar tradition. Generations of expertise drive this cooperative, now led by master weaver Shamji and his brothers, who blend heritage with innovation. The unit specializes in extra-weft Bhujodi weaving, geometric motifs, and naturally dyed wool, silk, and Kala cotton textiles. Equipped with independent production units for design, weaving, and finishing, the workshop upholds sustainable craft through organic fibers and plant-based dyes. With multiple national and international awards, their work represents Bhujodi’s living legacy of artistry and community resilience.
