Bandhani Rangrez

About Bandhani Rangrez Craft Community

Founded by Aslam Bhai Khatri, a fifth-generation Bandhani artisan from Kutch, this workshop continues one of India’s oldest tie-dye traditions, a craft dating back nearly 5,000 years. What began as a community practice within Khatri households has evolved under Aslam Bhai’s leadership into a thriving enterprise employing over a dozen artisans. Women tie nearly 200,000 knots on each sari, a six-month process demanding precision and patience, while men handle dyeing and finishing. The cluster now creates over 3,000 colour variations, expanding from traditional reds and yellows to contemporary palettes for global markets. Through this craft, Aslam Bhai empowers rural women with sustainable livelihoods and independence, ensuring that Bandhani remains both a living heritage and a source of dignity.
