About the Craft
The Oldest Textile Craft of India
Bandhani is the oldest textile craft of India, practiced for over 5,000 years and still deeply rooted in regions like Gujarat and Rajasthan. The name comes from the Sanskrit word ‘Bandh’, meaning “to tie,” reflecting the tie-and-dye technique that defines this art.
Artisans create thousands of tiny knots on fabric before dyeing it in vibrant colours, forming patterns ranging from dots to intricate motifs. Each piece requires meticulous precision, and the result is a fabric that carries both visual complexity and cultural significance.
Recognised for its age-old origins and enduring appeal, Bandhani remains one of India’s most distinctive expressions of textile craftsmanship.
