Bandhani - Tie dye

About the Craft

Bandhani, practiced for over 5,000 years in Gujarat and Rajasthan, is India’s oldest textile craft. The name comes from the Sanskrit ‘Bandh’, meaning “to tie,” reflecting the tie-and-dye technique at its core. Artisans create thousands of tiny knots before dyeing the fabric in vibrant colours, forming patterns from simple dots to intricate motifs. Each piece demands meticulous precision. Celebrated for its ancient origins and cultural depth, Bandhani remains one of India’s most enduring and distinctive expressions of textile craftsmanship.
